The International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) defines shark finning as the practice of retaining shark fins on board and discarding the rest of the carcass at sea.
We are aware that shark finning contravenes the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and its International Plan of Action for the conservation and management of shark stocks. It also contravenes and fails to respect a number of other resolutions passed by international marine bodies, which are intended to minimise waste and discards. Shark finning causes the death of a high number of sharks each year and threatens a species considered vulnerable.
For these reasons, KULALIA, S.L, as well as any affiliates and subsidiaries, taking into account the management measures applied by Regional Fisheries Management Bodies (RFMOs) and national and international standards for the conservation of marine life, has established and incorporated into its tuna purchasing and marketing policy the following points:
- Condemn and prohibit shark finning.
- Avoid commercial transactions with vessels that have been identified by Regional Fisheries Management Bodies (RFMOs), or by national or international authorities, as participating in the practice of shark finning and/or do not unload all sharks with their fins naturally intact, if they are retained.
- Avoid commercial transactions with any company that has not prohibited and condemned the practice of shark finning; not engage in transactions with companies that do not have a public policy prohibiting shark finning and requiring that sharks be landed with their fins naturally intact, if retained.
